Well, I am in the lovely town of Cold Lake, AB. We had an event here yesterday, which was good and all BUT the good stories come from TODAY! Today we had a day off, no driving just... hanging out in Cold Lake. So Erika and I were billeting together last night, and we had the greatest billets. They were the sweetest family and whatever we woke up and had breakfast with them and their kids are just fantastic. Both their girls were too young to come to the event so it was awesome that we got to spend time with them before bed and this morning. Then we took the van and were supposed to drive to Tim Hortons to meet the rest of our team... And so we're driving, appreciating the beauty of fresh snow, complaining that every year with the first snow fall Canadians for whatever reason seem to act like they've never driven on snowy roads before... come to a stop sign... it's slippery... and we like slow motion sliiiiiide on into the ditch. (For the record... I was not driving. I don't drive on tour as per Dad's suggestion... BUT it wasn't Erika's fault either, we were going slow. Brakes just fully locked up.. and the trailer is heavy.) Anyway so we slide into the ditch, took down one of those little metal reflector poles... Cool. So glad we didn't flip cuz van and trailer slide in like sideways almost, although I don't actually know how close the possibility of flipping was... Erika only mentioned it after haha. For whatever reason I seem to be very calm in car accidents........
So we hang out there, call the girls and call our billets and he (the father, Dave) says he'll come and see how bad it is. While we wait many cars and trucks come by... the greatest? Jehova's witness! With a pamphlet on the Six Myths of Christianity. Why thanks!... Anyway so Dave comes and hooks us up to his truck... and it was like really hard getting us out cuz our tires were spinning and whatever, didn't look like it was gonna happen till another guy came by and took Erika's spot and together them two fabulous guys drove us out! So Dave tells us to follow him and then when he turns left we'll turn right and be on the road to Tim Hortons. So we drive along... and he turns left and we... slide back into the ditch. TRUE STORY. This one was a little more gracefully actually.
So rather than repeat the whole scenario Dave, super wonderful billet that he is, takes us in his truck, picks up the rest of our team from Tim's and takes us back to his place where his wife makes us hot chocolate and popcorn - the real popping stuff and she put on her own butter and salt (it was AMAZING.) and we watched JUMANGI!! with their kids! Greatest movie... and such a cozy day with the snow all falling and stuff... and then Dave and his friend go to get our van out and drive it to the hotel for us :)
And that's where I am now, some hotel suite in Cold Lake. :) Honestly it was the best day off... I love days when I have stories to tell :) and it was a good hang out sess with Erika haha. Anyway, just thought I'd share :)
